Naruto Ninja Ranks: All Shinobi Ranks In Order

One’s skills and accomplishments determine the ninja ranks in Naruto. The lowest rank is genin, awarded to a student after completing the Ninja Academy Test and passing a Written Test and an Exam on the Ninja Scrolls. Above genin or chunin are awarded to students who show exceptional skill in ninjutsu and pass a Written Test and an Exam on the History of the Ninja World.

Ninja ranks in the anime and manga series, Naruto, are based on abilities and skills. The ninja ranks are genin, chunin, jonin, and Kage. A person can only achieve the rank of chunin after completing the Chunin Exams. The first three ninja ranks are required to become a jonin.

Genin:

Genin are the lowest level of ninjas and also the ones who exhibit the most distinction in strength. When they become ninjas, they start to do their bit for their hometown’s economy, sending them on missions that are to the liking of the people of their town. They’re commonly sent on D-rank or C-rank missions, which are routine manual labor jobs with the lowest possibility of risks.

Chunin:

A chunin is a person who has achieved an advanced level of mastery and success involving leadership and battle while living a traditional ninja lifestyle. Chunin is an entry-level position that could be assigned, such as C-rank or B-rank missions. Some chunin, such as Shino Aburame and Iruka Umino, move on to become Academy instructors.

Jonin:

Jonin are highly skilled and highly experienced ninjas who serve as military captains. Jonin are often able to use at least two types of elemental chakra. It is common for jonin to either go alone on a mission or to be sent on an elite-level mission.

Kage:

Kage is the title given to the leader of one of the Five Great Shinobi Countries’ hidden villages. They are collectively known as the Five Shadows. The Kage oversees the activities of the hidden village by ordering its members to perform missions, sending ninjas into the field, and making decisions regarding the safety of its people.

Special Ranks & Teams Prevalent In Shinobi Ranking System:

Anbu:

They literally mean: Special Assassination and Tactical Squad, the Anbu dispatch skilled covert ninjas assigned by the village leader. Anbu contains many divisions dedicated to different objectives.

Special Ranks:

Besides the usual ranks of genin, chunin, and jonin there are sometimes shinobi with a special rank or function. For instance, Kumogakure has an uncommon rank between that of jonin and Raikage, which bears the title “Head Ninja.” This person represents the shinobi forces and might lead the village officially.

Medical Teams:

The medical teams are keeping up with the principles of the shinobi derby. They’re responsible for working alongside the physicians to treat sick shinobi and to ensure that everything the organization needs is available. They’re similar to raid surgeons or Army medics. They are also heavily involved in the research of new techniques of healing & treatment methods.
